We are proud to highlight the many accomplishments of Marshall’s exceptional faculty recognized for recently accepted and published research and achievements in their field.

Data Sciences & Operations

Jacob Bien and Adel Javanmard have a paper accepted by the Journal of the American Statistical Association titled, “Controlling the False Split Rate in Tree-Based Aggregation.”

Rashmi Ranjan Bhuyan, Ph.D. received three awards from the Marshall Ph.D. office, including the Marshall Ph.D. Fellowship, the Marshall Ford Award, and the Marshall Ph.D. Student Outstanding Researcher Award.

Zijun Gao has a paper accepted for publication in Biometrika, titled “An Adaptive Null Proportion Estimator for False Discovery Rate Control.”

Katerina Giannoutsou, Ph.D. was awarded the Marshall Ph.D. Student Outstanding Teaching Award.

Charlie Hannigan, Mladen Kolar, and Inge Lindholm were recently selected to join the 2024–2025 Marshall Leadership Fellows cohort.

Gourab Mukherjee received the USC & Indian Institute of Science (USC-IISc) Collaborative Network Award for his proposal titled, “Efficient Score Estimation: Bridging Classical Statistical Theory with New-Age AI Applications.” He also was appointed Chair-elect 2025 for the Statistics in Marketing section of the American Statistical Association.

Somya Singhvi’s paper, “A Data-driven Approach to Improve Artisans’ Productivity in Distributed Supply Chains” was selected for the ACM Conference on Economics and Computation (EC’24).

Nick Vyas was invited to join the USC President’s Moonshot Working Group.

Finance & Business Economics

AYCA ALTINTIG’s research titled “CEO Characteristics and Risk-Taking under Economic Policy Uncertainty” was published in the Journal of Risk and Financial Management.

TOM CHANG and PEER FISS (Management and Organization) created the Marshall Minds faculty research series, which earned a 2024 Telly Award for video production. The series is produced by Marshall’s Instructional Design and Media Production teams.

Hyo Kang and John Eklund had a paper published in Organization Science titled, “Fast Friends: The Impact of Short Term Visits on Firms’ Invention Outcomes.”

Dan Wadhwani was appointed Director of Research and Graduate Programs 

Leventhal School of Accounting

DANIEL E. O’LEARY received the George Krull/Grant Thornton EDGE in Teaching Award by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) for his instructional case study, “Purchase Order – Analytic Audit.”

Management & Organization

PAUL ADLER was named to the International Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence of Spain to help advise the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service on different key aspects in the development and future of AI.

CHRISTIAN BUSCH has been named co-editor of an upcoming special issue of Strategic Management Journal themed “Chance, Luck, and Serendipity in Management.”

TOM CUMMINGS was awarded the AMLE Decade Paper Award for his 2013 paper, “Scholarly Impact: A Pluralist Conceptualization,” for its significant impact in the field of management.

NATHANAEL FAST was a committee member, moderator, and panelist at the July 2024 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s workshop series, “Human and Organizational Factors in AI Risk Management.” He also gave a talk at the National Intelligence Council for its 2045 Global Trends report, which will be presented to POTUS. He is also a lead presenter at America in One Room: The Youth Vote taking place this month in Washington, D.C.

NAN JIA was elected to the prestigious five-year Program Chair track of the STR Division of the Academy of Management.

TOM KWON, Ph.D. received two awards, including the Marshall Outstanding Ph.D. Teaching Award and a Marshall Ph.D. Fellowship.

Nandini Rajagopalan has a published paper forthcoming in the Strategic Management Journal titled, “The Entry-Deterring Effects of Synergies in Complementor Acquisitions: Evidence from Apple’s Digital Platform Market, the iOS App Store.”

Marketing

Diane Badame was also appointed to the faculty of the USC Bovard College Master of Management in Library and Information Science program.

Yanhao (Max) Wei with co-author Zhenling Jiang has a published paper forthcoming in Marketing Science titled, “Estimating Parameters of Structural Models Using Neural Networks.”
