Business Communication

YIJIA (VERONICA) GUO has earned the promotion to Associate Professor of Clinical Business Communication.

ANDREW (AJ) OGILVIE has earned the promotion to Associate Professor of Clinical Business Communication.

Data Sciences & Operations

FENG CHEN has earned the promotion to Associate Professor of Clinical Data Sciences and Operations.

YINGYING FAN has been appointed the IMS-CUP Coordinating Editor for the IMS-Cambridge University Press Textbooks/Monographs Series for a three-year term (2024–2026), while also serving as an IMS Editor of Statistics Surveys (2023–2025). She also has been invited to deliver a Keynote Lecture at the 2024 International Chinese Statistical Association (ICSA) China Conference in June, on the theme “Innovation in Data and Statistical Science: Theory, Methodology, and Practice.”

KATERINA GIANNOUTSOU, PhD received the prestigious 2024 University Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, offered by USC and the Center for Excellence in Teaching; her achievements will be recognized at the upcoming 43rd Annual Academic Honors Convocation in April.

ADEL JAVANMARD has two papers accepted for publication by The Annals of Statistics and International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR 2024).

MLADEN KOLAR has earned the full promotion to Professor of Data Sciences and Operations. He also was recently invited to serve as an Associate Editor for The Annals of Statistics (AOS) and has three papers accepted for publication by Electronic Journal of Statistics; International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics (AISTATS 2024); and Conference on Causal Learning and Reasoning (CLeaR 2024).

DARYL ONO’s paper “Recommendations to Internal Auditors Regarding the Auditing and Attestation of Mathematical Programming Models” was recently accepted for an oral presentation at the 2024 Western Decision Sciences Institute (WDSI) Annual Conference in Santa Rosa, California, in April.

MATTEO SESIA has two forthcoming papers that will be published: “Integrative Conformal P-values for Powerful Out-of-Distribution Testing with Labeled Outliers” will appear in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B and “Conformal Frequency Estimation Using Discrete Sketched Data with Coverage for Distinct Queries” will appear in the Journal of Machine Learning Research.

SOMYA SINGHVI’s paper, “Improving Farmers’ Income on Online Agri-platforms: Evidence from the Field,” has been accepted by Manufacturing & Service Operations Management (MSOM).

NICK VYAS has been invited to serve as the Vice Chairman of the 2024 World Trade Week Committee. He will work with Fortune 500 companies and governments to promote supply chain management.

YANFEI ZHOU, PhD received a poster award for her presentation at the inaugural SEEDS (Statistics Empowering Data Science) Conference held on campus, which was hosted by the Statistics area of the department and sponsored by the Marshall iORB Institute.

Finance & Business Economics

KENNETH AHERN has a working paper published this month by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) titled, “The Anatomy of Concentration: New Evidence From a Unified Framework.” He also was honored with the Golden Apple Teaching Award in MS Finance Core by the Master of Science in Finance fall graduates.

RAHSAN AKBULUT has earned the full promotion to Clinical Professor of Finance and Business Economics.

RICARDO DE LA O has a paper, “Which Subjective Expectations Explain Asset Prices?” accepted for publication in the Review of Financial Studies.

KEVIN FIELDS has earned the full promotion to Clinical Professor of Finance and Business Economics.

GERARD HOBERG’s paper “Scope, Scale and Concentration: The 21st Century Firm” was accepted for publication by the Journal of Finance. He was honored with the Diamond Award for Favorite Elective by the Master of Science in Finance fall graduates.

ANDRII PARKHOMENKO has two papers accepted for publication, including “Local Causes and Aggregate Implications of Land Use Regulation” in the Journal of Urban Economics and “Work from Home and Urban Structure” in Built Environment. The latter calculates the possible long-run impacts of increased remote work on where and how Americans work and live.

JULIA PLOTTS was honored with the Diamond Award for Mentorship by the Master of Science in Finance fall graduates.

SELALE TUZEL’s paper “Shattered Housing” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Financial Economics.

Leventhal School of Accounting 

K.R. SUBRAMANYAM has received the prestigious 2024 Provost’s Mentoring Award in honor of his commitment to mentorship and his positive impact on doctoral students and junior faculty during his distinguished 30-year career at Marshall.

Marketing

LARS PERNER has earned the promotion to Associate Professor of Clinical Marketing.

DANIEL SOKOL has a forthcoming ARTICLE in the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy titled, The Rise of Empirical Online Platform Research in the New Millennium.

GERARD TELLIS has peer-reviewed research, “Can AI Help in Ideation? A Theory-Based Model for Idea Screening in Crowdsourcing Contests” published in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science.

ARIANNA UHALDE has earned the promotion to Associate Professor of Clinical Marketing.

Management & Organization

CHRISTIAN BUSCH had a paper PUBLISHED in December in the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, “Asserting and Transcending Ethnic Homophily: How Entrepreneurs Develop Social Ties to Access Resources and Opportunities in Socially Contested Environments.”

ED LAWLER will be honored in April with the USC Lifetime Achievement Award and recognized for his eminent career and notable contributions to the university, the profession, and the community. Already named a USC Distinguished Professor, the retired scholar and the founding director of the Center for Effective Organizations (CEO), has been with Marshall for more than four decades. During his career, he was named one of the top six experts in the field of management by BusinessWeek. Focusing on human resources management, compensation, organizational development, and organizational effectiveness, his impact is immeasurable; he has published 51 books and more than 400 articles and has worked with many renowned Fortune 500 firms, government entities, and non-profit organizations.
