USC Marshall School of Business will expand its global learning opportunities with the founding of the Moore Family London Scholars Program, beginning spring 2025. In partnership with the Peter Arkley Institute for Risk Management, the international program will sponsor risk management students for experiential learning in the United Kingdom, a pioneering nexus of the insurance industry. Participants will have the opportunity to integrate classroom theory with real-world practice, working with executives from some of the top risk management and insurance companies, including the iconic Lloyd’s of London.

USC Marshall received a generous gift from Davis and Diane Moore to endow and establish the new program, covering the costs for 10 students to participate annually in the initiative.

“We are grateful to Davis and Diane, and the entire Moore family, for their generosity and vision in further elevating our risk management program. Immersing Marshall students in London, the insurance capital of the world, is an unmatched real-world learning opportunity for our undergraduates,” said Dean Geoffrey Garrett.

A 2019 report cited the need to fill 400,000 open positions within the insurance industry. Marshall’s risk management program is educating the next generation of risk management leaders to mitigate the looming talent crisis and move the industry forward as it pivots from traditional roles toward data analytics and enterprise risk management.

The Moore Family London Scholars program will significantly elevate Marshall’s efforts to reach more students interested in risk management, deepen ties within the industry, and help risk management students advance their professional paths forward.

The Moore family has a long history with USC and risk management. Diane Moore ’85 is a USC Viterbi School of Engineering grad and Davis Moore is the vice chairman of brokerage at Amwins Group. Their daughters Lindsay Moore ’13 and Megan Moore ’20 are both Marshall alums. Early proponents of Marshall’s risk management program, Davis sits on the Arkley Institute’s Risk Management Advisory Council and Lindsay sits on the Arkley Institute’s Advisory Board; Megan was among the first students to graduate from Marshall’s risk management program and now gives back as part of the Arkley Institute’s Trailblazers Council for young alumni.

Offering an insider’s view of Lloyd’s of London was a major factor in the Moore’s decision to help establish their family’s scholars program.

“Marshall’s emerging and fast-growing risk management program has a substantial pipeline of future insurance professionals,” Davis and Diane Moore said in a joint statement. “Having firsthand knowledge of the London marketplace will provide students with a competitive advantage, an opportunity that most industry professionals don’t experience until having spent years working in our industry.”

Davis Moore was fortunate to work in the Lloyd’s of London marketplace in the 1980s when he learned and experienced the importance of trading and transacting in London. It was a formative experience. Megan Moore currently works in London and will be an essential support in arranging executive meetings for the visiting scholars.

“Providing USC students with the opportunity to learn about the London marketplace is something we hope will be helpful and impactful to their careers,” Davis Moore commented.

Kristen Jaconi, Executive Director of the Arkley Institute, shared that the Moore Family London Scholars Program will deepen USC risk management students’ understanding of insurance, reinforcing the learnings from their risk management courses.

“Many of our risk management students know that the insurance industry started in Edward Lloyd’s coffee shop in the late 17th century with the first underwriters insuring ships and their cargo,” Jaconi explained.

Four centuries later, Lloyd’s remains influential in the insurance marketplace. Jaconi notes that many of the industry guest speakers visiting her classroom often reference the company as part of their business strategy: The risk manager from a major U.S. museum who engages Lloyd’s to insure the museum’s art collection or the former NBA player who offers disability insurance to professional and college athletes through Lloyd’s.

Now, students will visit the historic company in person. “By traveling to London, our students will see Lloyd’s in action,” Jaconi continued. “We are planning on having the students shadow a team and literally walk the Lloyd’s floor with them as they broker a real-time transaction.”

Over a three-day working period, students in the Moore Family London Scholars Program will meet with leaders and executives working at the firm. They will tour Lloyd’s iconic building and witness business conducted in the Underwriting Room. Participants will also learn about the innovative Lloyd’s Lab and its InsurTech accelerator program.

Additionally, the Moore Family London Scholars will enjoy a culture day in the city as well as travel to Bath and Stonehenge to round out their once-in-a lifetime experience. The week-long trip will take place each spring, with the first trip in spring 2025.

“The Moore Family London Scholars Program will provide the students an opportunity to expand their network to the tight-knit insurance community in London. Perhaps a few Moore Family London Scholars will end up working in London like Megan,” Jaconi added.

The Lloyd’s experience will provide Marshall students with a unique chance to delve deeply into the dynamic industry and engage with seasoned professionals in the field. It’s a win-win scenario for the students and for the industry.
