Fall 2024 Dean's Report

Fall 2024 Dean's Report

This year's highlights include the business of sports, undergraduate leadership, and career development innovations.

“We’re committed to becoming the world’s leading comprehensive business school, and we keep innovating to get there. A Marshall education is about much more than just getting a business degree; it’s about embarking on a lifelong journey to shape our world. It’s a world of both unlimited potential and unparalleled responsibility.”

—Dean Geoff Garrett

This year we’re focused on expanding our students' career pathways, diving deep into exciting opportunities in sports and AI, and focusing on human leadership skills like transparency, compassion, and self-reflection. We’re developing leaders with the knowledge, skills and commitment to not only succeed in their own lives, but also have an enduring impact on the lives of others.

BUSINESS OF SPORTS

Business of Sports

“The world of sports is a prism, shine a light through it, and you’ll see all aspects of contemporary life. Together with USC Annenberg, we are launching a first-of-its-kind, multidisciplinary hub aimed at building the nation’s leading academic sports program at the intersection of business, entertainment, media, science and technology.”

— Dean Geoff Garrett

“Whether you’re interested in finance, real estate, marketing strategy, or organizational behavior, there’s a real world example from sports to discuss.”

— Courtney Brunious, Assistant Professor of Clinical Management and Organization

UNDERGRADUATE LEADERSHIP

Teaching + Innovation

“What sets USC Marshall apart is our commitment to developing leadership skills at the undergraduate level... we believe in nurturing these crucial skills from day one. Our goal is to nurture students to become ethical business leaders with strong technical expertise and who are deeply attuned to societal challenges.”

— Sr. Vice Dean Raman Randhawa

  • The Robert J. Coury Applied Leadership Program empowers first-year USC Marshall students to develop confidence, character, and courage through a free, non-credit curriculum. This diverse program, open to all undergraduate business students, fosters a rich environment for personal growth, professional development, and cross-cultural leadership skills.

Students gain deep insights into their unique leadership qualities and values through Gallup CliftonStrengths and VIA Character Strengths assessments. Interactive seminars and cohort meetings focus on strengths-based and values-based leadership, culminating in a competitive capstone experience that puts learned skills into action. Upon completion, students earn a certificate and digital badge, with opportunities to become paid mentors for future cohorts. The application period for all Marshall and Leventhal first year students and new transfers is November-December for admission in the following Spring.
