What made you choose to attend USC Marshall?
I chose to attend USC Marshall because as a high schooler, my priorities were to attend a prestigious university near a large and vibrant city. In addition to those preferences, I was also looking for a school with students that valued a work-life balance. Touring USC's campus I looked around and saw students at this amazing, competitive school who looked so happy. Maybe it's the year-round perfect weather, but after stepping foot onto campus, I could sense the energy and excitement that a college campus should have. Having grown up abroad most of my childhood, I was looking not only for international opportunities to study abroad but also a diverse student body. My senior year of high school, USC had the second most international students in the nation. Overall, the academics, proximity to Los Angeles, extracurricular, international, and professional opportunities made USC Marshall a clear choice.
Advice you wish you had known while applying to college:
I think often times it is easy to get caught up in the college application process, so it is incredibly important to take a step back and take a look at the bigger picture. My advice would be to imagine yourself attending the university and living in the city for four years. If possible, it is extremely helpful to visit campuses and speak with current students to gain a better understanding of what life is like on campus. While it can be a stressful process, remember not to focus solely on rankings or where your friends are going and really focus on finding the best fit for you. Make sure your essays showcase who you are as a person, because while you have worked hard for your grades and test scores, you are so much more than a cumulation of numbers. At the end of the day, trust your instincts and you will soon find a new place to call home.
USC activities/general hobbies:
Marshall Student Ambassador, Smart Woman Securities, Marshall International Exchange Program Student Host, Marshall Entertainment Association, Women of Cinematic Arts, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.
Why do you love Los Angeles?
I love Los Angeles because of the endless opportunities it provides. From both a social and professional standpoint, there is such an array of possibilities that I am thankful for the span of four years to explore the city. From a social standpoint, there is incredible food, beaches, hiking, shopping, and so many different districts with hidden gems. The proximity of Downtown Los Angeles for restaurants or events near LA Live is also incredibly fun and convenient. From a professional perspective, the city provides so many opportunities for amazing internships as it is one of the major cities in the nation. My campus tour was my first time in California and, as my parents like to joke, we'll see if I ever leave!
What global experiences have you had in college?
Freshman year as part of the Global Leadership Program, I was able to travel to Beijing and Shanghai for a week during my spring break. The Global Leadership Program is a year-long class in which the first semester is centered around impressive guest speakers who share business advice and insights. The second semester is spent in preparation for the business trip to China. While in Shanghai and Beijing, we were able to visit 1-2 companies every morning and explore the sights during the afternoon. I had never seen factory operations first-hand before, and on the trip I was able to see how cars, air conditioning, paper, and beer are manufactured just to name a few. The variety of other businesses ranged from huge global corporations such as Mondelez International to clothing companies and entrepreneurs in the healthcare space. The trip and class was an amazing experience, and to this day I have friends I shared the experience with in almost every Marshall class or club. I am looking forward to studying abroad again next semester, this time for the entire semester. I will be traveling through the Marshall Exchange program to Vienna, Austria and could not be more excited.
What internship/employment opportunities have you taken advantage of at Marshall?
The summer after my freshman year I interned at an asset management firm in Chicago called Driehaus Capital Management. The spring semester of my sophomore year I interned at an independent production company in Los Angeles called Alcon Entertainment. Some of their films include The Blind Side, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and most recently BladeRunner 2049. The summer after my sophomore year I interned at Envestnet, a financial technology company in Chicago. Now I am currently interning at NBCUniversal as a New Partnerships intern within Universal Pictures.
