Subject: Announcement: The Promotion of Management and Organization Professor Sarah Townsend

USC Marshall

Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to announce that the President has approved the promotion of Sarah Townsend to Associate Professor of Management and Organization, with tenure, effective immediately.

Professor Townsend joined the Marshall School of Business in 2013 as an Assistant Professor of Management and Organization. She graduated in 2010 with a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and before joining USC spent two years as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business’ Team and Group Research Center.

Professor Townsend is an impactful scholar known internationally for her contributions to the literature on discrimination, diversity, and performance. In particular, her work has demonstrated how cultural beliefs shape experiences and create divides within the workplace, a key issue for a modern workforce marked by diversity. Professor Townsend is also a leading scholar in the use of psychophysiological measures to examine how cultural divisions affect people’s stress, engagement, and performance, putting her on the cutting edge of this research. Her work has been especially impactful in that she has been designing scalable interventions to attenuate the stress and obstacles created by cultural divides in the workplace, making her scholarship highly actionable.

Professor Townsend is a prolific researcher and has published 35 refereed journal articles in journals such as the American Journal of Public Health, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Social Issues, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Perspectives in Psychological Science, Psychological Science, Social Cognition, and Social Psychological and Personality Science. In recognition of her achievements, Professor Townsend was appointed the Kenneth King Stonier Assistant Professor in Business Administration at USC in 2018. She also won a Lord Foundation Grant of $100,000 for her project entitled “Difference-Education: An Intervention to Reduce Inequality and Improve Intergroup Understanding.”

Professor Townsend has also shown excellence in the classroom, teaching in Marshall’s undergraduate core program with instructor ratings that exceed the instructor averages for most electives at Marshall. She has supervised independent study classes, has mentored two lab managers, and has placed them both in organizational behavior Ph.D. programs. She has also made strong contributions through her service to the department and the profession, serving on dissertation committees, MOR hiring committees, and on the editorial board of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Professor Townsend was already named a Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science back in 2016.

Professor Townsend’s promotion is a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contributions in research, teaching, and service over the years.

Please join me in congratulating her and welcoming her to the ranks of tenured associate professors.
