 Dear USC Marshall Community:

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Kyle Mayer as Chair of the Department of Management and Organization, effective July 1, 2020, for a three-year term.

Kyle received his Ph.D. in Business and Public Policy from the Haas School of Business at the University of California in 1999. He joined the Marshall School of Business at USC as an Assistant Professor in September 1999 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2006 and to Full Professor in 2014. His research focuses on understanding inter-firm relationships, and particularly firms’ use of contracts, with a strong theoretical grounding in transaction cost economics. He has published widely in the top management journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization, Management Science, Organization Science, and the Strategic Management Journal.

Kyle is a highly regarded teacher who is known for his enthusiasm and dedication to his students. He was named Marshall's Educator of the Year in 2006 and won Golden Apple Awards in 2003 and 2010. Kyle is also an outstanding mentor and the winner of a Mellon Mentoring Award from USC in 2006 as well as Marshall’s Evan C. Thompson Mentoring and Leadership Award in 2015. His doctoral students have gone on to placement among elite universities, and he has received MOR Department awards for research, teaching, and service multiple times. He also has an exceptional record of service to Marshall and the discipline. He has served on the editorial boards of four top journals, previously served as Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Journal, currently serves as Associate Editor for the Strategic Management Journal, and is an incoming Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Review. At Marshall he has served as the Faculty Director for the Marshall MBA Program and as the PhD Coordinator for the Department of Management and Organization, to name but some of his accomplishments. He is one of the most respected members of the Department and sought out by his colleagues—junior and senior—for his insight and guidance.

Kyle will be succeeding Peer Fiss, who has served as MOR Department Chair for the last three years. The Department has continued to grow and flourish under Peer’s leadership, including successful recruiting and promotion that has strengthened the Department’s intellectual profile, teaching prowess, and diversity. Peer has also continued to strengthen the Department’s collegial culture, continuing the successful path that started under Tom Cummings before him.

The Chair of the Department of Management and Organization is among the most important leadership positions we have at Marshall, and we are delighted that Kyle has agreed to take on this role for the next three years. Please join us in congratulating Kyle on this appointment and thanking Peer for his outstanding service to MOR and Marshall.

Best,

Gareth M. James
Dean
