Through the Marshall LINC program, I had the fortunate opportunity to spend 10 days in Sydney, Australia, meeting with companies from a variety of different industries. Throughout the semester leading up to the trip, the class learned about Australia’s rich cultural history, notable businesses, and other necessary information so that we would be prepared when we landed. Professor Plotts did an excellent job of informing us about what customs are practiced in Australia and how similar or different businesses are in comparison to the United States.
Heading into the trip, I had high expectations and plenty of questions to ask, some of which included how Expedia diversified their advertising for the ANZ (Australia and New Zealand) market or how Macquarie Capital was affected by the Global Financial Crisis in 2008. After 10 days of insightful visits to these companies, I can safely say that my expectations were exceeded and that all my questions were answered. I had the opportunity to gain valuable understanding from knowledgeable employees through discussing topics such as mobile gaming with Aristocrat Technologies or sponsorship relations with the Sydney Swans, a local AFL team. The experience and knowledge I gained from the LINC Sydney trip has translated directly into my internship at Fritz Martin Management, a sports marketing firm based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fritz Martin Management specializes in bridging the gap between athlete influencers and corporate products and services. The firm represents and books appearances for a number of Trojans, some of which include NFL Hall of Famers Marcus Allen and Ronnie Lott.
At my internship I am surrounded daily by negotiations for appearances, sponsorships, and promotions. Thanks to my experience in LINC Sydney, I am able to understand the terms being mentioned around me and actively take part in discussions. I also assist in analyzing web traffic and developing the company’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy. Thanks to the knowledge I gained while in Sydney talking to working professionals, I was able to assist Fritz Martin Management immediately.
LINC Sydney, along with the Marshall School of Business, prepared me brilliantly for my internship and I look forward to sharing my experiences with my fellow classmates when I’m back on campus in August.
