The Marshall School of Business proudly recognizes the diversity that not only makes our campus great every day but also enriches and unifies our community. April is Diversity Month and all month long we are honoring and celebrating the diversity woven around us.

Happy Ramadan from the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion! Those who celebrate Ramadan will start a 30-day holy month of fasting to commemorate when God revealed the first chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. During this period, the gates of heaven are open and the gates of hell are closed. The end of Ramadan is marked with the sighting of the crescent moon, marking Eid-al-Fitr, which should be in mid-May.

Cesar Chavez Day

Cesar Chavez Day
On March 31st, we celebrate Cesar Chavez day, a US federal commemorative holiday. Cesar Chavez is a civil rights activist and American labor leader who cofounded the National Farm Workers Association and organized the most successful boycott in US history leading to better working conditions, access to healthcare and pensions, and an agreement allowing field workers the right to unionize.

On March 31st we see, celebrate, and honor the lives, accomplishments, and resilience of the transgender community. We thank the trans people whose courage and achievements have served as steppingstones towards safety and inclusion for future generations to come!

Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunar calendar where months are moon cycles. It is celebrated by over a billion people throughout Asia, as well as all over the world. It is the most important holiday in many Asian countries. In China, a 15-day celebration kicks off on New Year’s Eve with traditional New Year foods and commonly ends with the Lantern Festival. The Lunar New Year is a time for family gatherings and brings a renewed sense of optimism about new beginnings and opportunities.

Black History Month

Black History Month
Black History Month began in the United States as a way of commemorating people and events in the history of the African diaspora and is increasingly celebrated around the world.
According to The Association for the Study of African American Life & History the 2022 Black History Month Theme focuses on the importance of Black Health and Wellness.

Martin Luther King Jr Day
Today, we celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Day. MLK was a civil rights activist who organized and led demonstrations that challenged the socio-economic status quo of the Jim Crow South. From marches to boycotts, Martin Luther King was dedicated to the fight for equity and inclusion. He is remembered for his voice, in which he used to amply the voices, experiences, and grievances of his people. Happy MLK Day!
Fun Fact: Though MLK Day was established to commemorate King’s birthday, it does not fall on his actual birthday.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust Remembrance Day
Holocaust Memorial Day, January 27, marks the 77th anniversary of the day of liberation from Auschwitz-Birkenau the largest Nazi Death Camp. Today we practice a day of remembrance for those who lost their lives in as well as survivors of the Holocaust. LA has a vibrant Jewish community as well as many resources to learn more about the Holocaust, including the LA Holocaust Museum. For further reading and resources, follow the links below
