New Paradigms for Leadership in a Global Economy
Marshall to Host Los Angeles Times Festival of Books Panel

On April 22, the USC Marshall School of Business will host the "New Paradigms for Leadership in a Global Economy" panel at Hoffman Hall on the USC campus as part of the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The panel will begin at 10 a.m. and will focus on emerging leadership trends in business culture. The panel will be moderated by Robyn Walker, an associate professor of clinical management communication at USC Marshall and author of Discourse Perspectives on Organizational Communication, a book she co-authored with panellist and Marshall associate professor of clinical management communication Jolanta Aritz. Their research focuses on how leadership emerges through communicative practices in intercultural teams.

The panel will also feature Dave Logan, co-author of the New York Times #1 2011 bestseller Tribal Leadership, and a USC Marshall faculty member. Kirk Snyder, whose book The G Quotient: Why Gay Executives Are Excelling As Leaders and What Every Manager Needs to Know was selected on Harvard Business Review’s prestigious annual reading list, will additionally participate in the panel discussion. Snyder is an assistant professor of clinical management communication at Marshall.

The conversation will cover three new leadership perspectives from the Marshall faculty members on the panel. "Tribal leadership" asserts that every organization and company is a tribe, or a network of tribes-groups of 20 to 150 people that form naturally. "G-quotient" focuses on seven qualities that gay executives bring to the workplace--inclusion, creativity, adaptability, connectivity, communication, intuition and collaboration--which has led to increased job satisfaction and workplace morale. “Discursive leadership” focuses on the idea that leadership emerges and is co-constructed through communicative interaction in the workplace.
