China

Why China?

Because China is the second largest economy and the largest exporter in the world, as well as the United States’ biggest trading partner, it was a logical choice for the travel component. The rapidly growing commercial and economic ties between the United States and China offer a unique opportunity to study the effect of global commerce on the accounting profession.

What’s on the itinerary?

On past trips, Leventhal students visited accounting firms (E&Y, PwC), Chinese companies and multinational corporations (GM-Shanghai, BaoSteel, BOE), as well as the China Securities Regulatory Commission, State Administration of Taxation and Chinese Institute of CPAs. They also engaged with their peers at Peking University, and explored the many cultural and historical riches of the country, including the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and the Jade Buddha Temple.

What professors and students are saying…

“Because of increased globalization and the free flow of investment capital, cross-border transactions are growing at a record pace. They are highly complex due to disparities in legal environments, tax jurisdictions, economic and political systems, and cultural settings.”
—Shiing-wu Wang, Associate Professor of Accounting

“This course allows our students to learn to be comfortable with and knowledgeable about the global business environment that they will work within upon graduation. This type of knowledge cannot be learned entirely from reading and lectures... it must be experienced.”
—Robert Trezevant, Associate Professor of Accounting

“Many of us developed a better understanding of the political and business environment of China as a result of our visits to government agencies, important businesses and accounting firms. Our cultural endeavors—from eating relatively traditional cuisine, to visiting markets, to visiting landmarks—further enriched our experience. This trip provided us an incredible, memorable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that most of us will never forget from our time at USC Leventhal!”
—Zeb Bidwell MBT ’13, tax staff accountant, Marcum LLP
