Transfer Students

Transfer Applicants may submit a university application once a minimum of 30 transferable units, including the Marshall admission prerequisites, are completed (or in progress). The Marshall Admissions Committee evaluates each applicant's academic performance and history, as well as the subjective application materials. Applicants who earn a minimum 'B' grade in each prerequisite course and maintain an overall cumulative 3.6 grade point average will have an advantage in the evaluation process. The university will accept fall term applications only.

At Marshall, you will earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business or Accounting. In your major, you will develop a thorough knowledge of business fundamentals, including leading organizations, finance and economics, business communication, accounting, marketing and business strategy. Then, as a senior, you can choose a concentration-one area of business to study comprehensively. Every semester, our academic advisors will help plan your schedule to ensure you are matriculating properly. Marshall School of Business provides the foundation for a lifetime of learning and successful business practice.

In addition to Marshall program and admission information, we have included a graphical description of the relationship between transferable coursework in the USC/Marshall matriculation process.This information will aid you in understanding how what you complete at your transfer institution affects the courses you complete at USC.

Marshall Recommended Transfer Preparation

1. Complete the Marshall School of Business prerequisites.

Transfer candidates complete the following courses for Marshall School of Business admission consideration:

  • WRIT 130/140 (English Composition 2, also a University requirement)
  • ECON 203 (Microeconomics)
  • ECON 205 (Macroeconomics)
  • MATH 118 or MATH 125 (Business Calculus)

Students who successfully complete these courses with 'B's' or better will be competitive for admission.

2. Enroll in courses that meet USC and Marshall graduation requirements.

The following optional transferable courses assist students with meeting both USC and Marshall graduation requirements:

  • Accounting 1 and Accounting 2 (will remove one required BUAD course. BUAD 250A and 250B are replaced by BUAD 305x)
  • General Education Categories 1, 2, 3 & 5
  • Diversity Course

With the recommended transfer preparation, admitted students will complete these remaining USC/Marshall courses at USC:

  • MATH 218
  • WRIT 340
  • General Education Categories 4 & 6
  • Business Core Classes and 4 Business Concentration Classes

The remaining courses must be completed at USC and can not be transferred. [With the appropriate financial and accounting sequence, BUAD 250AB will be waived amd replaced with BUAD 305.]

3. Refer to your school's articulation agreement for equivalent and transferable courses.

Here's help on which courses transfer to USC

  • Articulation Agreements with California Community Colleges
    If you are a transfer student attending a California community college, you'll be pleased to hear that USC has articulation agreements with most California community colleges.
  • Transfer Credit and Policy
    Study these policies carefully to identify courses which will transfer.
  • Articulation Agreements
    All agreements are available on the USC Articulation Office Web site or from your college counselor. Not all community college courses will transfer to USC. Part 1 of the articulation agreement is the General Education section of the articulation agreement which lists courses taken to fulfill G.E. categories I, II, III and V. (Remember that categories IV and VI must be taken at USC.) It also indicates which courses fulfill the lower-division writing requirement and diversity requirement. Part 2 lists all transferable courses which are equivalent to USC courses. Part 3 lists all courses which transfer for credit to the University.

Transfer from a Community College

USC will accept units from all post-secondary schools in the United States that have been accredited by one of the six regional accrediting agencies. However, USC will not guarantee acceptance of course work taken at institutions not accredited by the regional agency for the area where the institution or branch is located.

Articulation Agreements and Advisement Sheets

Articulation agreements and advisement sheets list all 107 community colleges in California. These documents may be helpful to prospective students in determining the transferability of courses to USC from their institution. Not all community college courses will transfer to USC. Most academic courses are acceptable for transfer credit from a two-year school, but students will not receive credit for remedial course work. Please reference the USC articulation agreement to ensure you are taking transferable coursework. Courses that do not appear on the articulation agreement are not transferable.

The Articulation Office will review all courses and completed work for possible credit. Extension courses transfer only if the college where they were taken accepts them toward the baccalaureate degree. Official transcripts of college work taken elsewhere must be submitted at the time of application to the USC Office of Admission. A credit evaluation will be completed which will list transfer courses accepted for credit.

Transfer from a Four-Year Institution

USC does not have articulation agreements with 4-year schools, although we do have articulation histories (partial course lists) for most California State Universities (CSU) and University of California (UC) schools. However, most courses will transfer from accredited, 4-year colleges and universities, and you can plan your general education work by using the information contained in the Transferring to USC brochure.

If you are attending an out-of-state, two-year school, work with the Undergraduate Admissions Office at the Marshall School of Business to make sure you are taking academic, baccalaureate-level classes. The Admissions Office will help you identify the classes that should fulfill general education categories.

Academic Policies Affecting Transferability of Courses to USC

A maximum of 64 semester units may be transferable to USC. A minimum of 64 units toward the bachelor's degree must be earned in residence at USC. Advanced Placement credit and International Baccalaureate credit is granted at USC and will be evaluated solely according to USC's Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate policies. Credit or placement granted by another college or university is not transferable to USC. Original Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate score reports must be sent to USC directly from the testing agency.

Marshall Transfer Workshops:

If you are unable to attend a Transfer Day, you may be interested in attending a Marshall Transfer Workshop. During the workshop you will have the opportunity to meet with an admissions counselor to review your current transcript and discuss what steps you need to take in order to apply.

Marshall Transfer Applicants

Grade Cards

The Marshall Admission Committee will require final grades for all prerequisite courses. We will accept an informal final grade report in lieu of the official transcript. The final grade form must be completed by the course instructor. Submission of the informal grade report may significantly expedite the application review process. Please be advised that while an admission decision may be rendered; you are responsible for the submission of an official Final transcript.

If you have pre-major requirements in progress at the time of your application submission; please print a grade report form for each of your instructors. You may download a grade report form here.

Scholarships

Norman Topping Student Aid Fund

The purpose of the Norman Topping Student Aid Fund (NTSAF) is to assist students with high financial need who demonstrate an extraordinary level of community awareness in their pursuit of higher education at the University of Southern California.  Applicants residing in areas surrounding the University Park and Health Science campuses, in addition to first-generation college students, are given primary consideration in the selection process.  Please note that the scholarship is not limited to these populations.

The Norman Topping Student Aid Fund is the only student initiated, student funded, primarily student administered scholarship in the nation.
