Your first year of study provides a core of general management knowledge and skills as it illustrates the demands of a career in business. You will develop solid analytical abilities, establish collaborative and team-building skills and become aware of social responsibility as a factor in decision-making. You will acquire an understanding of the global marketplace and how it is affected by cultural differences. Faculty lectures are set aside in favor of case discussions, student presentations and team projects. An accelerated, interactive classroom environment includes applied learning activities, management simulations, case competitions and field research. You will explore ways to use new technologies to solve business problems.

With courses that cover everything from the theoretical fundamentals to the cutting edge of international business and electronic commerce, Marshall provides a comprehensive approach to the challenges you will face in modern business. Your first year is dedicated to a core group of required modules that have been carefully integrated within a four-term format.  In the spring semester all first year students take two electives, chosen from a basket of select courses, that enable specialization in particular disciplines.

GSBA 510
Accounting Concepts and Financial Reporting (2.5 units)

Information systems for public reporting and for management decision-making; theory of asset and income measurement; interpretation and uses of accounting data and financial statements; analysis of cases.
 
GSBA 502
Professional Development for Leaders (1.0 unit)

Builds a conceptual understanding of management communication and professional development in business speaking and writing. Small class sessions facilitate extensive practice and individualized feedback for increasing logical argument and persuasion skills. The use of current graphics software enhances presentation abilities.Professional Development for Leaders is a course that begins in Term I and continues through the the first year at Marshall.

GSBA 524
Data and Decision Models (2.5 units)

Provides an understanding of data analysis and modeling to help in the solution of business decision problems. Topics covered include the description and interpretation of data, tools for quality improvement, comparisons of groups of data, and use of regression models to analyze relationships among variables.

GSBA 540
Contemporary Issues in Competitive
Strategy (1.5 units)
Introduces the role industry and competitive analysis serves in an organization. Topics covered include global competition, innovation, the use of standards, competence, and building organizational capabilities to sustain competitive advantage.

Marketing Management (2.5 units)

Emphasizes marketing tasks within an enterprise as it operates in both the domestic and international economies. Analytical decision-making tools are applied to marketing decisions that are examined and assessed along with an exploration of the tools and techniques that comprise a comprehensive marketing strategy.
 
GSBA 521
Corporate Finance (2.5 units)
 
Develops an understanding of the theory and practice of contemporary finance, with an emphasis on financial problems, decisions, and policies of corporations. This includes topics such as the management of short-term and long-term assets, financial instruments and markets, and financial policy applications.

GSBA 533
Organizational Behavior (1.5 units)

Introduction to the functions and integrative responsibilities of the general manager. Corporate governance and accountability, organizational structure design, organizational boundaries, integrating and configuring resources.

Term 3

GSBA 504
Operations Management (2.5 units)

Delivers the basic concepts, tools, and techniques needed to understand and manage the operations function of the firm. Examines the role of "what-if analysis" in aiding managerial problem-solving by studying and testing models used in resource allocation, service systems, and project management.

GSBA 511
Microeconomics for Management (2.5 units)

Analyzes a variety of firms and the markets in which they operate. Decision-making is viewed from the standpoints of opportunity, costs, supply and demand, elasticity, trade flows, industrial organization, perfect competition, monopoly, and consumer theory.

 

GSBA 536
Management Accounting (1.5 units)

Reviews the accumulation and interpretation of accounting data by management, including the use of cost information, the development of cost system frameworks, activity and variance analysis, measurement, responsibility centers, and the role of controllership in a firm. The use of accounting information to formulate strategic managerial decisions in a global business environment.

Contemporary Issues in Global Economic Strategy (1.5 units)

Study of political and economic forces in a global context and their effects on markets, policies, and strategies.

With a focus on analyzing the nature of competition within industries, the formulation of competitive strategy, general management processes, and the achievement of long-term competitive advantage.

GSBA 526
Global Economics (1.5 units)

Important issues related to global economics. Measurement of economic performace, macroeconomic indicators, sources of country-specific data, and data evaluation. Analysis of growth experiences, growth factors and long-term economic growth forecasting.


GSBA 580
PRIME: Business Practices in the Pacific Rim (1.5 units)

Improves awareness and understanding of the variety of economic, institutional, and cultural issues pertinent to
Pacific Rim business and trade. Requires overseas professional project that delivers hands-on experience in the markets, economic policies, and business practices of the nations.
