The Business of Medicine

Health care is currently the most dynamic industry in the United States. It continues to become more complex through managed care consolidation and the growing pressure to manage costs. One casualty of recent health care trends has been the physician's salary. Despite the expertise that physicians receive through a grueling education, many physicians have seen their salary growth flatten in recent years. Another, more subtle, yet more meaningful casualty has been the control physicians feel they have lost to hospital administrators, HMO executives, lawyers and politicians.

These conditions have created a fundamental desire by physicians to take back control of the health care industry. The USC Master of Medical Management (MMM) degree provides the formal business education physicians seek in order to realize their professional goals. The MMM was created with these needs in mind and provides the following benefits:

  • Career Growth - The knowledge and credentials earned through the MMM allows its students to pursue and be successful in a variety of executive positions
  • Quality - The MMM curriculum is modeled after the Executive MBA program and the program is taught by distinguished USC faculty
  • Flexibility - The unique design of USC 's MMM allows physicians to earn a rigorous business education from a prestigious university without interrupting their careers
  • Time - The Master of Medical Management is completed in only one year
  • CMEs - Students earn 50 CMEs upon completion of the program.
  • Relationships - students forge bonds that last a lifetime and become members of an impressive alumni network.

Whereas the typical executive MBA covers a wide range of business and industry structures and public health degrees stray too far from business and management, the MMM focuses on leadership and entrepreneurial thinking in a health care context.

The program is an integrated management curriculum taught by faculty in the Marshall School of Business, the School of Policy, Planning and Development and the Keck School of Medicine.

"I was just offered and accepted a CEO position. The Search Committee was very impressed with the USC Marshall MMM degree. There is no question in my mind, that without my USC degree, I would not have landed this job."

- Michael Patmas, MD, MMM

"The practice of medicine is changing at a pace that is taking it out of the hands of physicians. In order to maintain a level of control of our own business, doctors need to be trained in business practice, theory and leadership techniques. I chose the MMM program at USC to give me this training and to open up new possibilities for me. It was a delightful surprise to have a group of students who were engaging and lively - from all over the country representing a variety of medical practices and points of view. I was taken by surprise that the program was so enjoyable as well as intellectually rewarding."

- Franklin G. Moser MD, MMM, FACR

"This experience has been the most positive occurrence in my entire medical career. I am already seeing doors open that would never have occurred before the MMM. This program has my highest endorsement, and would without reservation recommend to any physician who is looking for a positive 'stretch' intellectual experience."

- Harry J. Stoller, MD, MMM, DABFM
