Expressions Web 1 - Intro to EW & HTML

Expressions Web is a web authoring tool similar to Dreamweaver. It allows you to create web pages in both WYSIWYG and code view. This handout covers the folloiwng topics:  Overview of HTML & CSS, the Expressions working environment, and how to create sites, web pages, work with text, lines, images, and hyperlinks. It also includes how to publish your web site to USC's web server and some general advice on publishing to other servers. To follow along with the handout, you will need the support files on the right.

Expressions Web 2 - Intro  to EW & HTML Continued

Covers using Expressions Web to create the following:

Image Hotspots - This allows you to make differnt sections of a photograph clickable as a hyperlink.
Tables - Covers creating tables in code view, using the tables tools, and the Draw Tables tools.
iFrames - an iframes exists as a window on your current page through which you can view other pages. This allows you to stay on the current page while using hyperlinks to change which page is loaded in the iframe.
Frames - This allows you to divide your page up into different windows. Each window can contain a different page. This is most often used for menus.
Interactive Buttons - We will use Expression Web's "interactive" buttons to create image rollover buttons.

This handout covers how to use CSS styles to layout a page using relative and absolutely positioned div tags as content containers. Covers how to configure the software version of Outlook. Versions 2000 & XP are for an online only connection while 2003 allows both on and off line access. Note that AIS does not support offline access for versions of Outlook older than 2003.

Archiving - Autoarchive

Autoarchiving frees up space in your Outlook account by automatically moving older email to another location such as your network drive. This handout covers Outlook storage limits at Marshall, determining your current usage, managing your account, setting up autoarchive, and viewing archived items.

Archiving - Manually & Other Alternatives

Like autoarchiving, manually archiving also frees up space in your Outlook account by moving email to another location. The difference is that while Autoarchive performs at set intervals; manually archiving can be done at any time by the user. For example, you have an immediate need to free up space or you are graduating and would like to back up all of your e-mail to a non-Marshall location.

Forwarding Incoming Outlook E-mail to Another Account

Covers how to collect dates using drop down boxes for month, day, and year.
One of the problems of collecting dates is the format that different regions use.  For example, in the US most people type in this format:  mm-dd-yyyy; howerver, in many other countries the month and day are reversed (dd-mm-yyyy).  Qualtrics date validation will not catch any reverses where the day number is under 13. 
This handout covers how to avoid this issue by providing the responder with three separate drop down arrows:  one for day, one for month, and one for year.  ,

Connecting Your Laptop to the Internet While on Campus

Wireless For Windows Vista

Wireless allows users to connect their laptops to the Internet while on campus but does not require the user to physically connect using cables. Reception is available within all class rooms in Popovich Hall including the patio, as well as other areas throughout USC and the first floor of the Orange County campus. Please note that this is a 10 Megabit/sec shared connection meaning that depending upon how many users are connecting at once, it can be considerably slower than using ResNet. The handouts cover activating your USC account and how to connect using wireless.

ResNet - Connecting Your Laptop to the Internet While On Campus

ResNet allows users with a registered Network Card to connect their computers to the Internet at a top speed of 10 Megabits/sec (approximately 1 MB/sec) while on campus. There are ResNet jacks located throughout Marshall and the Residence Halls and wireless connectivity will be provided in the near future. To connect to ResNet, you must have a network card, activate your UNIX account, and register your network card with USC via your UNIX account. These handouts cover activating your UNIX account and configuring your laptop for a ResNet connection to USC.

ISP -
Using USC as Your Internet Service Provider

2000

As a USC student, you can access the Internet from home via your telephone jack by using USC as your Internet Service Provider. The service is free but you may incur long distance charges from your phone company if USC does not have any dial-up numbers in your location. This service is provided by a USC department outside of Marshall called Information Services Division (ISD) and uses your UNIX username and password. If you would like to use USC as your Internet Service Provider, you will need to activate your UNIX account and then configure your computer for a PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connection to USC. The handouts below contain instructions on how to perform both of these tasks.

CITRIX Virtual Lab CITRIX allows students, faculty, and staff to access applications on a Marshall lab PC from a remote computer such as a home PC or a wireless personal PC.

Remote Desktop allows you to connect to and control a computer remotely.  For example, you can use your home computer to connect to your work computer.  Once connected, you can run applications and access drives on your work computer from your home computer.  Your home computer's screen will display the screen of your work computer and you will control your work computer using your home computer's keyboard and mouse.  Note that you can also access any network drives your work computer can access.
